“You must write for children in the same way as you do for adults, only better.” – Maxim Gorky
My work in progress had its origins in something I dreamt several years ago.
I’ve learnt, with dreams, that a notebook and pen on the bedside table is a necessity. How quickly they’re otherwise forgotten. Of course, in the light of day, deciphering scribbled notes is another matter!
This particular dream was of a fantasy world, with most of the characters fully formed. Where it came from is anybody’s guess. I’ve not watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies, don’t read fantasy novels (apart from Harry Potter), so this adventure’s origins, set in a parallel medieval world, are a mystery.
I write adult romance, mostly historical, and originally there was an element of romance in this story, too, along with all the adventures my heroine and her cohorts experienced. I aimed it at the Young Adult sector but, after letting it stew a while, concluded it should be for Middle Grades, for those around 10 to 12 years of age. So, romance removed. The heroine’s age lowered. A different slant on the story. Emphasis altered. A few more weeks of intensive hard work.
I’m looking forward to this story evolving into an actual book. Then I can truly say, to quote the famous fantasy author Neil Gaiman, “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand”.
